Vilnius instead of London

April 25th, 2010 by UFO in Lithuania, Traveling

Considering our unsuccessful trip to London that ended in a pub in Ostrava I bought the ticket to Vilnius, Lithuania to go to see Alina. Travelling there was not so funny from the beginning, because I still felt a little wasted from the last night, but I managed to overcome it.

Castle Street in the Vilnius city centre

It was very nice to be in Vilnius again, I really like the city. The weather was nice and we were mostly walking in the streets and enjoying. I also had to try as much as possible from the Lithuanian cuisine, so food during my stay was mainly provided by the Čili restaurant chain :-).

Banks of the Neris river

I regret I was there for such a sort time, I hope I will return there as soon as possible. But first I have to finish my school projects and exams :-(.

I have finally got some time to write posts about recent events, they will follow after this one. But first I would like to share some pictures from Vilnius. Most of them I took while I was walking in to the city centre and back.

Friday in Trakai

July 4th, 2009 by UFO in Lithuania

On Friday we decided to relax and visit Trakai, a small town not far from Vilnius. We took a bus and in less than 45 minutes we were there. The weather was beautiful, just the temperature could be lower. 28 degrees in shade was too much for me.

Trakai castle

The town is almost entirely surrounded by large lakes. In the northern part there is a large castle on an island. We did not go inside, but we took a boat trip around the lake. The funny thing was, that as soon as we entered the boat, it started raining heavily. Everywhere you could see sunshine, but our boat was almost the whole way under the small rain cloud :-).

Although the weather was too hot and tiring, it was a very nice spent Friday. It was the first of many trips we plan to make in the Baltic region.

Recent amount of traveling

July 4th, 2009 by UFO in Denmark, Lithuania, Traveling

I have not written anything here for quite some time, because I was quite busy. First I had to pass all my exams. I did not put so much effort into studying, but in the end, everything went all right. The only „glitch“ was the big project team exam. The teachers were really slow, we spent there over 6 and half hours. After that, we were so tired we could not resist the mark we got. Maybe it was the point :-). My parents came for me directly after my last exam. We packed all my stuff and my bike to the car and headed back to Czech Republic. It was a very long journey.

I planned to stay in the Czech Republic for one week. I was working during the day and meeting my friends in the evening. It was exhausting :-), but I finally could taste good Czech beer. When the week was over, I packed my things again and took a bus to Lithuania.

So now I am relaxing here in Vilnius, working a little, trying to study and having fun.

Back to Lithuania (for a while)

June 12th, 2009 by UFO in Lithuania, Traveling

I finally found some time to write another blog entry. I wanted to make another trip before I finish my studies in Denmark, so two weeks ago me and Alina went to Lithuania together.

We flew from Copenhagen to Riga, where we stayed couple hours. We just walked around the city, but deliberately avoided the old town, because we are planning to visit it again during the summer. Then we took a bus to Vilnius. Our first action there was visiting Čili Pica, where I tasted a good meal again (really exceptional comparing to Danish „food“) :-).

The time I was there was working time, I needed to prepare for my exams and Alina was finishing her thesis. But it did not mean we could not have fun. We went to play bowling, visit the cinema (see my Caroline blog entry). We also visited Visaginas, Alina's home town, for two days. I also walked a lot around the Vilnius city centre and surroundings. You can take a look at the pictures (first few are from Riga).

I did not want to go back to Denmark so much, but I had to finish my exams.

Week in Lithuania

February 10th, 2009 by UFO in Lithuania, Traveling

In the beginning of February I went to Lithuania to visit my girlfriend Alina for a week. The journey there was quite all right, except the fact I needed to get up at 2 o'clock in the morning. For some reason I could not sleep in the train, but I took a nap during the whole flight :-).

Alina and Antanas were waiting for me at the airport. When I stepped out of the terminal, I felt a temperature shock. In Denmark there was around 0 degrees, in Vilnius –17. Hopefully, Antanas took us to the central bus station by car. He also showed us, how to do wheelspin and burn tires even on a very icy parking lot (shit happens, forgot a handbrake :-D). At the bus station we took a bus to the edge of Vilnius.

First day we spent at place of the Alina's friend, Rita. We also went for a trip to Trakai, which is a historic region with a lot of lakes and a castle. It was very freezing weather, so our trip was short. In the evening we went to the cinema for the movie „Yes Man“. When we woke up, we went to see the city centre. It was still freezing, but we survived that ;-).

Vilnius Cathedral

In the afternoon we travelled by bus to Alina's home town, Visaginas, where we spent another three days. It is rather small town, but it has much to offer, so we had lot of fun. It is also close to a very big lake. As you can see, the weather was not suitable for swimming so much, just for walking on the ice :-).

Frozen Visaginas lake

Our next stop was Kaunas, the second largest city in Lithuania. We met our friends from Denmark Antanas and Vaida there. In the evening we again went to the cinema, this time for the movie „Doubts“ and then to the hill to observe Kaunas at night. Next day we walked through the city. I have to say, it was much more beautiful in the night :-).

From Kaunas we travelled back to Vilnius. The bus stopped absolutely everywhere, so the journey took about four hours. In the night we explored Vilnius old town. We went to see it again on the next day again, it was my last day there. I was quite in a hurry to go shopping and then catch my flight and I did not have enough time to see a lot.

Just before leaving I bought lot of stuff that is hard to get or awfully expensive in Denmark: alcohol, frying pan for our kitchen and a big light bulb (12 cm) to my room. At the airport security check they really had fun because of me. After I put the baggage into the X-ray, the security people were looking at the monitor and laughing. Then the woman asked me to open the bag. She took the light bulb and said something like: „Hey, he's really got a lamp here“ :-D. I asked if it was a problem and she replied that it was not, but it was highly unusual.

The plane had a delay of 25 minutes because of some problems on the Copenhagen airport. Because of that I missed my direct train and had to wait at the Copenhagen central station for more than half hour.

During the stay I tried various meals, mostly Lithuanian specialities, but also some Russian stuff. Is was really delicious :-P. Now I am a little bit disgusted with just looking at the Danish food (poor taste, high price).

The trip was amazing, I had lot of fun and I hope am going to return there very soon.
