Merry Christmas

I wish merry Christmas, good luck and health, lot of presents and good mood to everyone! Happy new year 2009 :-).

Home sweet home

December 24th, 2008 by UFO in Denmark, Traveling

Yesterday at 9 o'clock I began my journey home with a train to Copenhagen central station. There I changed to the airport train and met my Slovakian friend Lucia and her brother. When we came to the airport and I saw the check-in queue, my first reaction was „WTF?“. They just served four flights at one counter. While I was waiting in the queue, I saw my neighbour Inese in the café. Another incredible meeting. And later when I finally checked-in, I met Kuba from EILC language course. We discovered we are on the same flight and also got the seats next to each other :-D. It was really funny.

My neighbour Inese at the airport.

The funny mood went away a little bit when I did not find my baggage in Prague. I wonder when will it come, because I called to the airport today and they said they had no report from Copenhagen. But they „assured“ me that I am not the only one, total 30 baggages from my flight did not make it to Prague. Rest of the journey was pretty boring, just waiting two hours for the train and sleeping three hours inside it.

Now I am just sitting at home, watching falling snowflakes outside and finally enjoying the Christmas time :-).

Christmas are coming

December 15th, 2008 by UFO in Denmark

Hurray, today I passed my English exam. I got 10 on the „strange“ Danish grade scale (from the best to worst mark it is 12, 10, 7, 4, 02, 00, –3 :-D), so something like B in the ECTS. It was the last thing this year, now I can start to notice that Christmas are coming.

Both of the main pedestrian zones here in Odense are nicely lit by thousands of lights, shops are open even on Sunday and people are like crazy :-). This year I have to buy presents here, because I am going home on 23th of December. I think I will buy something typical Danish. Considering the prices here, I hope my wallet will not be completely empty after this.

My new bike

December 13th, 2008 by UFO in Denmark

I have finally felt so sick of riding the piece of junk I own that I decided to buy something better as a Christmas gift for myself :-). I bought one almost unused from my friend Megan, who was leaving home to USA and could not take the bike with her. I really like it, I can achieve the same speeds with half the effort and it does not make weird sounds while riding.

My new bike, Mustang mudslide :-D

Unfortunately, it did not stay „new“ for long. Just after one day I made too sharp turn and made very nice slide on the icy tarmac (in fact, not so nice). I am more or less fine, just my wrist hurts a little. The bike survived too, with minor scratches and broken front reflecting light :-). Next time I will try to be more careful…

Trip to Stockholm

November 29th, 2008 by UFO in Traveling

Three weeks ago, we decided to go to Stockholm for a weekend. On Friday 21st we took a plane from Copenhagen to the capital city of Sweden. Because of the snowstorm over Arlanda airport the plane was delayed, but it was not a problem to check in at the hostel.

Next morning we got up early and went towards the central station to buy the Stockholm card („free“ public transport and entrance to almost every museum). At 9 o'clock we were almost the only people in the streets, because it was snowing very heavily. After buying the card, our tour could start :-). During the next days we visited a lot of museums, the Royal palace and the city hall.

I also experienced a very improbable/impossible meeting (again :-D). My friends Pavel and Juli (Erasmus students in Finland) just happen to be in the city at the same time. We talked over the phone and arranged a meeting at the Royal palace after changing guards event. But we bumped to each other in the streets before that. Yes, Europe is very small.

The whole trip was really amazing, except the way back. We came to the airport just before 4 o'clock in the afternoon just to know, that our flight was cancelled and the new one flew at 20.15. So we waited and waited. In the end, the flight was delayed for another 45 minutes. The train from Copenhagen was delayed too, so we were back in Odense at 2 o'clock in the morning instead of 22.30 :-).

Weekend in Berlin

November 11th, 2008 by UFO in Traveling

People from the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) organized for us a trip to Berlin, the capital city of Germany. It was quite a large trip, over 130 people attended. On Friday morning (6.45, so maybe it still is night) we sat down into the buses and started our 10 hour journey. Along the way we stopped at the border shop to buy some stuff. The prices were much lower than in Odense, so many people bought a lot of beer and/or other kind of alcohol.

After the arrival to Berlin we checked in to the hostel next to the zoo train station. It was a very good spot, because it is situated almost in the centre of the city. Then we went to the city. At first we walked to the Victory Column, then we continued to the Brandenburg Gate. There we split up, everybody was very hungry. Our small group (me, Ignas, Rob and Christian) finally ended in McDonald's at the Alexander Platz (it is really not near, check the map).

Our next stop was a near pub. I do not remember its name, but I remember that they were brewing their own beer. It was very good, we drank about 13 litres of it :-P. On the way home we took a train, so it was much more comfortable than walking.

To wake up the next morning was very terrible experience, but after breakfast I was more or less all right. On that day we were walking about the city. We saw many interesting places like Potsdamer Platz, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Checkpoint Charlie and some other. We also visited the Berlin TV tower. It was really a magnificent view from that, although the weather was a little foggy.

Sunday was the day we were supposed to leave. When we arrived to the assembly point, only one bus instead of two was there. Couple minutes passed and we got to know that the second bus was stuck on the ferry and was not coming. So the driver of the other bus made some calls and after a half hour we sat down into the „Berlin City Tour“ bus. Unfortunately, this bus could not cross the Danish border, so we needed to change, but that was just a little detail.

I really enjoyed the weekend in Berlin and I am looking forward to similar trips.

Pancakes and milk party

November 3rd, 2008 by UFO in Denmark

Saturdays are usually relaxing days after parties on Fridays nights. And this Saturday was not an exception. We decided to plan something non-alcoholic, so the pancake and milk party was the perfect choice. Antanas prepared the dough (special recipe :-D) and we fried it.

The pancakes were very delicious, everything disappeared in a short while. That is the main reason why you cannot see any photo from the „feeding time“ :-). After we finished eating, we played the game named Alias). It was very difficult, because everybody was sooo tired. When we finished approximately half of it, we decided that it would be better to go to sleep.

It was a really quiet and nice day of doing nothing :-).

House of H. C. Andersen

November 2nd, 2008 by UFO in Denmark

After a small pause I am writing posts again :-). Last week we went to visit the H. C. Andersen's house. The actual house is just a very small part of the large museum. As a visitor you can read and see almost everything about Andersen's life.

For me, the excursion was quite boring. Sure, something was interesting, but most of the displayed things were just things of daily use „touched“ by H. C. Andersen.

Back to Odense

October 20th, 2008 by UFO in Traveling

I am finally back in Odense. The journey has been quite long, 11 hours in total. I traveled its first part (Lappeenranta → Helsinki) in Pendolino train. Actually, it was two Pendolino trains in one, but still it was not enough for all the people. I tried to buy a seat reservation, but the train was hopelessly full.

Pendolino trains in Finland is better comparing to the Czech Republic. It is not only used as the eye candy, but as the fast mean of transport. On tracks between Lahti and Helsinki we went at speed of 220 km/h, that is something Czech railways can only dream of.

I flew with this, Embraer E-170

Rest of the journey was more or less all right. At the Copenhagen airport I just ran into the first train I saw and than discovered that it is a right one :-).

During the week holiday I traveled over 2100 km by trains and 1850 km by planes. I really liked it and I think it is not my last visit to Finland.

Lappeenranta, Helsinki, Lahti

October 19th, 2008 by UFO in Traveling

On Thursday I was just relaxing and did not want to travel anywhere, so I stayed in Lappeenranta. After we woke up, we decided to have only a little breakfast and take a walk along the lake to the university for lunch. The weather was not so good for taking marvellous pictures, but at least it was not raining. When we finished our lunch, Pavel stayed in school for some lectures or laboratories and I walked to the lake again to enjoy the nature.

On that day I went to sleep relatively early, because I wanted to take a train to Helsinki at 8:35. As I sat down in the train, I fell asleep and woke up at the Helsinki main station. What a pleasant journey :-). In the city I walked a lot around the centre. I also visited the National museum and took the boat to the fortress of Suomenlinna.

The last city I visited during my trip to Finland was Lahti. I traveled there because I was interested to see the ski jumps. Again, I walked slowly around the centre and went to see the harbour. I did also a little bit hiking in the hills near the ski jumps area.
